The Winchester Auto Dealer's Exchange auction on the state line processes 200 to 300 vehicles each week.
Bunker Hill, WV, March, 2002 - Getting rid of a used vehicle is a hassle-free process at the Winchester Auto Dealer's Exchange (WADE), owners said. The interstate 81 Exit 323 operation that straddles the West Virginia-Virginia state line moves from 200 to 300 vehicles a week. Auctions are held every Saturday at 10:00 A. M.
Often, car owners don't have the time or patience to sell a vehicle by advertising it in local newspapers. The auction can help an owner get more cash than a new-car dealer may have allowed in trade-in value, according to Rod Mayhugh, a part-owner and auctioneer at WADE. Mayhugh and WADE President Jim Tribble, a part-owner, took over the auction in April 2001, after the previous owners had left the operation unused for several months.
WADE offers dealers and individuals a look at several hundred vehicles at a time. And the seller has many potential buyers. "Instead of having one person come by, you have hundreds of people looking at it at the same time," Tribble said. The auction is neither the buyer nor the seller on any deal. it is only the facilitator of the transaction, for which it is compensated by the buyer and the seller.
Another option is to donate the proceeds from a car's sale to a local charity. Under that type of sale, the owner can get full retail value for the car, and then write that amount off of the next year's personal income taxes. "We sell the vehicle for them and give the money back to charity, Mayhugh said.
The auction's policies and explanations on the rules and obligations of buying and selling are available at the WADE office and on this Website.
